Kitchen Appliance Care in Heat and Humidity

The kitchen is the hardest room on appliances. These routines help them cope with heat, steam, grease and dust.

Kitchens combine every condition appliances dislike: heat from cooking, steam, grease, spills, dust and, in Bahrain, a warm, humid climate. Appliances that sit in this environment work harder and wear faster. A few simple routines make a real difference.

Ventilation first

Appliances shed heat. If they cannot, they run hotter and longer.

  • Leave space around the fridge as the manual advises, particularly behind and above.
  • Do not box appliances in or stack items on top of them.
  • Use the extractor fan or open a window while cooking.
  • Keep vents on ovens and hobs clear.

Refrigerators

  • Keep the condenser area free from dust and grease, cleaning with the power off.
  • Wipe door seals and check that they grip.
  • Let hot food cool before it goes in.
  • Do not overfill, so air can circulate.
  • Keep the fridge away from the oven and direct sun where possible.

Ventilation space, clean coils and dry surfaces help kitchen appliances cope with heat.

Electric stoves and ovens

  • Wipe spills once cool, since baked-on residue damages surfaces and elements.
  • Keep controls and the surround dry.
  • Check door seals for wear.
  • Do not cover the oven floor or vents with foil unless the manual allows it.

Washing machines

  • Leave the door or lid ajar between washes to let moisture escape.
  • Clean the drawer, seal and drain filter regularly.
  • Do not overdose detergent.
  • Check hoses for wear.
  • Descale as advised, especially if you notice scale. See hard water and scale.

Air conditioners near the kitchen

Grease and steam can coat filters and coils. Clean filters more often if the unit is near the cooking area, and keep the outdoor unit clear.

Grease and dust

Grease combined with dust forms a sticky layer that clogs vents, fans and coils. Wipe surfaces regularly with a mild cleaner that is suitable for the appliance, and never spray liquid into vents or controls.

Electrical habits

  • Do not overload sockets or extension leads.
  • Plug heavy appliances straight into wall sockets where the manual requires it.
  • Check plugs and cables for heat marks.
  • Keep water away from electrical connections.

Watch for early signs

Longer cooking times, unusual noises, slower cooling, damp patches, sticky or hot plugs and rising bills are all early warnings. Act early. Our annual appliance care checklist gives you a once-a-year routine.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a fridge need around it?

Follow the manual. Ventilation gaps matter, and many models specify space at the sides, back and top.

Should I leave the washing machine door open?

Leaving it ajar between washes lets moisture escape and reduces mould and odours.

Can grease damage appliances?

Yes. It combines with dust to clog vents and coils and can dull surfaces.

How often should I clean kitchen appliances?

Wipe spills promptly, and do the deeper cleans from our annual checklist at least once a year.
