An Annual Appliance Care Checklist for Bahrain Homes

One checklist, four key appliances. Use this yearly routine to catch small problems before they become expensive repairs.

Most appliance failures do not come from nowhere. They build up from dust, scale, wear and small faults that nobody noticed. Once a year, set aside an hour to go through the appliances your household relies on most. This checklist covers four of them. It uses only safe, no-tools checks, and tells you when to call a professional.

Air conditioners

  • Clean or replace filters.
  • Look at the outdoor unit for debris, dust and corrosion, and clear the surrounding space.
  • Check for water stains or drips near the indoor unit.
  • Run the unit in cool mode and listen for new noises.
  • Book a professional service before summer: AC maintenance.

Refrigerators and freezers

  • Wipe door seals and check that they close firmly.
  • Vacuum or brush dust from the condenser, where it is accessible, with the power off.
  • Check that vents inside are not blocked by food.
  • Clear space behind and beside the fridge for ventilation.
  • Check the temperature and look for frost build-up.
  • Defrost if the manual calls for it.

A short yearly routine catches dust, scale and seal problems early.

Washing machines

  • Clean the detergent drawer and the drawer recess.
  • Wipe the door seal and remove trapped debris.
  • Clean the drain filter, following the manual.
  • Inspect the hoses for bulges, cracks and drips.
  • Run an empty hot cycle with a suitable machine cleaner, if the manual advises.
  • Check that the machine is level and does not walk during spin.

Electric stoves and ovens

  • Clean spills from hobs and around burners once they are cool.
  • Check the oven door seal for gaps and damage.
  • Look at the cables and plugs for heat marks.
  • Check that every burner and oven function lights up and heats.
  • Clear the vents and keep the area free of items that can overheat.

General household checks

  • Make sure sockets are not overloaded or warm to the touch.
  • Replace damaged plugs and cables with the help of a qualified electrician.
  • Keep a note of each appliance's brand, model, age and any repairs.
  • Save photos of the model labels for quick reference.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I do this checklist?

Once a year is a good minimum. Filters, seals and drain filters benefit from more frequent attention.

Do I need tools?

No. The checks above are visual and cleaning checks. Leave anything that needs panels removed to a technician.

What if everything looks fine?

Good. The checklist is about catching small issues early. Keep the record for next year.

Should I service every appliance every year?

Not necessarily. ACs often benefit from a yearly service. For others, repair when a problem appears or the checklist finds one.
