Common Fridge Faults in Hot, Humid Climates

A fridge works harder in a hot, humid kitchen. These are the faults that appear most often and what each one means.

A refrigerator is one of the few appliances that runs all day, every day. In a hot, humid climate like Bahrain's, it works against a warm kitchen, frequent door openings and moisture in the air. That strain explains many of the faults technicians see. Here are the common ones.

1. Warm fridge, cold freezer (or the reverse)

In many frost-free models a single fan and a damper move cold air from the freezer into the fridge. If the evaporator fan fails, the damper sticks or the airway is iced up, the fridge section warms while the freezer stays cold.

2. Ice and frost build-up

Humid air entering through door openings or a poor seal freezes on the evaporator. If the defrost system, which includes a heater, a timer or board, and a sensor, fails, ice builds until airflow is blocked.

3. Water pooling inside or under the fridge

Usually a blocked defrost drain, which sends melt water into the cabinet or onto the floor. Overflowing drip trays and loose water lines on fridges with water dispensers are other causes.

Ice around the evaporator area and pooling water often come from a defrost or drain fault.

4. Door seal problems

A seal that is warped, torn, dirty or hardened lets warm air in. The fridge then runs longer, frosts up and uses more power. A quick check is the paper test: close the door on a sheet of paper and see whether it pulls out easily.

5. Dirty condenser

Dust and grease on the condenser coils stop the fridge shedding heat. The compressor runs longer and hotter. This is common in kitchens with cooking grease and dust.

6. Compressor that runs constantly, or will not start

Constant running can follow dirty coils, a poor seal, a hot room or a cooling problem. A compressor that will not start, with clicking or humming, may involve the start relay or the compressor itself.

7. Noise

Rattling can mean loose parts or a fan blade hitting ice. Humming or buzzing may point to the compressor. Clicking that repeats can involve the relay. Gurgling is often normal refrigerant flow.

8. Warm, sweating exterior or door

In humid weather condensation can form on cool surfaces. Persistent sweating can mean a leaking seal or a heater that keeps door frames warm.

9. Sensor and board faults

A faulty temperature sensor or a failing control board can cause the fridge to run too cold, too warm or erratically.

10. Sealed system problems

A leak in the sealed cooling system, or a blockage within it, reduces or stops cooling. It is less common than the faults above and needs specialist assessment. See gas leak or look-alike fault.

What you can do

  • Keep the fridge ventilated, with space behind and above.
  • Clean the condenser area on a regular basis, following the manual and with the power off.
  • Wipe door seals.
  • Do not overpack, and keep vents clear.
  • Let hot food cool before it goes in.
  • Avoid leaving the door open.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my fridge struggle in summer?

Higher room temperature and humidity increase the load. A dirty condenser or weak seal makes it worse.

Is ice in the freezer normal?

Some frost is normal in manual-defrost models. Heavy, growing ice in a frost-free model suggests a defrost fault.

Why is there water inside the fridge?

Often a blocked defrost drain. Clearing it and finding the cause helps stop a repeat.

Is a noisy fridge dangerous?

Not usually, but a new, loud or changing noise is worth checking.
