About window AC units
A window or through-wall air conditioner puts everything into one cabinet: the compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil and two fans, with one half facing the room and the other facing outdoors. They are common in older apartments, rented rooms, majlis spaces, small offices, workers' accommodation and shops. Compared with split systems they are cheaper to buy and have fewer parts to go wrong, but they are noisier, less efficient and sit directly in a wall or window opening where dust, vibration and condensation all gather.
If you own or manage rooms that rely on window units, regular care and prompt repairs matter. Our comparison of split and window AC repair and lifespan explains how the two types differ over the long run.
Common window AC problems
- Runs but barely coolsDirty filter, clogged condenser or evaporator coil, weak fan, or reduced refrigerant.
- Water dripping indoorsThe unit should tilt very slightly outward so condensation drains outside. A blocked drain hole or a unit that has shifted can drip into the room.
- Rattling or buzzingLoose casing, fan blade touching, worn fan motor bearings, or poorly seated mounting.
- Freezes upRestricted airflow or a refrigerant issue leads to ice on the evaporator.
- Fan runs, compressor does notCapacitor, overload or compressor faults.
- Trips the breakerElectrical or compressor trouble. Stop resetting and call.
- Smells musty or sourA damp, dirty coil or tray.
- Remote or controls unresponsiveControl panel or sensor problems.

How we inspect a window unit
- Understand the setupWe ask how old the unit is, how it is mounted and what the problem looks and sounds like.
- Check the mountingThe unit's tilt, support and seal in the opening are checked, because poor mounting causes leaks, noise and vibration.
- Front and rear inspectionFilter, evaporator coil, condenser coil, fans and drain path are inspected.
- Operating testsThe unit is run to check airflow, cooling and cycling, and to listen for abnormal sounds.
- Electrical and compressor checksA technician tests capacitors, switches and the compressor circuit if the symptoms point that way.
- Repair or adviseWe explain the fault, recommend repair or, where the unit is very old or the repair uneconomical, tell you honestly.
Repair or replace?
Window units are inexpensive compared with split systems, so the age and condition of the unit matter a lot. A new filter, a coil clean or a fan capacitor is often well worth doing on a unit that is otherwise sound. A failed compressor in an old unit may cost more to fix than the appliance is worth. We would rather say so than sell a repair that will not pay off.

Safe things to check
- Make sure the unit is set to cool, with the fan running and a sensible temperature.
- Check the breaker and plug, and that the cable is not warm or damaged.
- Clean or rinse the removable front filter following the manual, and let it dry.
- Make sure curtains, furniture or items on the sill do not block the airflow.
Reducing future faults
Wash the filter regularly, keep the rear of the unit clear of debris, and make sure the mounting stays level and snug. Yearly AC maintenance before summer helps window units just as much as split ones. If you are weighing a replacement, see AC installation and our guide to running costs for split and window units.

Window AC repair FAQs
Why does my window AC drip inside the room?
Most window units are designed to tilt very slightly outward. If the tilt has been lost, the drain hole is blocked or the unit has been fitted level, condensation can run back inside. A technician can check the angle and the drain path.
Can a noisy window unit be quietened?
Often, if the cause is loose mounting, a worn fan motor or a rattling casing. If the compressor is the source, repair may not be economical on an older unit.
Does a window AC use more power than a split unit?
Generally window units are less efficient than modern inverter split units, especially older ones. See our running cost comparison.
The unit smells bad when it starts. What should I do?
Clean the filter and let the unit dry out. If the smell persists, the coil or drain tray likely needs cleaning by a technician.
Can you replace a window AC with a split system?
That is an installation job, not a repair. See AC installation for what is involved.
