Electric Stove Not Heating? Common Causes and Safe Checks

When an electric stove stays cold, the cause may be simple or electrical. Here is how to work through it safely.

An electric stove that will not heat is more than an inconvenience. Because it involves mains power and high temperatures, it deserves a careful approach. Start with the safe checks below. If they do not solve it, stop and call a technician.

Start with the simple checks

  1. Is the stove getting power? If the clock, lights or display do not work either, check the isolator switch and the breaker. Reset a breaker once only.
  2. Is a control locked? Many models have a child lock, a control lock or a demo mode. Check the manual.
  3. Is the setting right? Make sure the burner knob or touch control is on and, for ovens, that the mode and temperature are set, and any timer has not cancelled cooking.
  4. Is the cookware suitable? Induction hobs need magnetic cookware. Warped or very small pans can fail to heat properly on ceramic and solid hobs.
  5. Is the issue one burner or all? One cold burner points to that burner or its switch; everything cold suggests power or a main control.

Common causes

Burner element failure

Radiant coils and solid plates can burn out or crack. If one burner stays cold while others work, the element is a likely suspect.

Faulty burner switch

Energy regulators and switches wear. A burner may heat only at some settings or not at all.

Loose or damaged terminal connections

Heat can damage terminals and cables, causing intermittent heating or none.

Oven element failure

An oven that stays cold while the lights and fan work often has a failed bake or grill element.

Thermostat or sensor faults

If the oven does not hold temperature, or heats weakly, the thermostat or sensor may be at fault.

Control board or touch panel problems

On modern cookers, electronic controls can fail, show error codes or stop responding.

Supply problems

A loose supply connection, a failing isolator or a damaged supply cable can interrupt power.

What to do while it is out of use

Switch off at the isolator. Use a safe alternative for cooking. Do not use the stove if you see damaged elements, burn marks or smell burning.

What not to do

Information to give a technician

  • Brand and model, and whether it is a freestanding cooker, built-in oven or hob
  • Which burners or oven functions do not work
  • Any error code
  • Whether the breaker tripped
  • Age and repair history

Frequently asked questions

Why is only one burner not heating?

Most often the element or its switch. A technician can test which.

The oven light works but it does not heat. Why?

The light uses a different circuit. The oven element, thermostat or control may have failed.

Can I replace an element myself?

We advise leaving it to a qualified technician, because it involves high-current wiring.

Is a tripped breaker related?

It can be. A fault in an element or wiring can trip the breaker. Do not keep resetting it.
