Electric hobs look simple, but each burner depends on a control switch, an element and wiring that all work under heat and load. When one wears, the symptoms are often distinctive. Knowing them helps you describe the problem accurately.
How a burner works, in brief
A knob or touch control tells the hob how much heat you want. On coil and solid plate hobs, an energy regulator switches the element on and off to give the setting you chose. On ceramic hobs, radiant elements sit beneath the glass. On induction hobs, electronics generate heat in the pan itself. Each type fails in different ways.
Symptoms and likely causes
One burner will not heat
The element or its switch has probably failed. Another sign is a visible break, bulge or blistering on a coil.
A burner heats only at high or only at low
Often a worn energy regulator or switch contact.
A burner stays on at full heat
Serious. Switch off at the isolator. A stuck switch or faulty regulator can leave a burner on.
Heating is uneven
A coil that has sagged or partly failed, or a pan with a warped base, can heat unevenly.
Burner clicks, flickers or cycles oddly
Normal regulators cycle, but erratic behaviour can signal a worn switch or loose connection.
Smell of burning or sparks
Stop using the hob. This can mean damaged wiring, a failing element or contact problems.
Ceramic glass hot spots or cracks
A crack in the glass can let spills reach the electrics. Stop using the hob.
Touch control unresponsive or beeping
A control board, moisture or a locked panel can cause this. Check for a lock mode first.

Safe checks
- Clean spills and make sure controls are dry.
- Check whether a control lock is on.
- Try a flat-bottomed, suitable pan.
- Compare burners to see if the fault is on one or all.
- Note any error code.
What not to do
Repair options
Depending on the fault, a technician may replace an element, a regulator or switch, a terminal block or a control board, or advise that a new hob is better value. We explain the options after diagnosis. See electric stove repair.
Prevention
- Wipe spills promptly.
- Use flat-based, correctly sized cookware.
- Do not drag pans across ceramic.
- Keep controls and the hob surround dry.
- Report early signs, such as flickering or slow heating.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my burner stay red after I turn it off?
Some residual glow is normal while it cools. If it stays on at full heat, the switch may have failed. Isolate it and call.
Can I replace a coil myself?
We advise against it, because of the mains wiring involved.
Why does my induction hob not respond?
Check for locks, pan compatibility and moisture. Persistent faults need a technician.
Is a cracked ceramic hob safe?
No. Stop using it until it has been inspected.
