A gas hob that clicks but does not light is a common problem. Often the cause is minor, but because gas is involved, a careful approach is essential. This is a safety guide, not a repair manual. Our listed stove service covers electric cookers, so for gas faults we advise involving a qualified gas professional.
If you smell gas
- Do not light a flame or use switches, phones or anything that could spark.
- Open windows and doors to ventilate.
- Turn off the gas at the supply valve if it is safe to reach.
- Leave the area and warn others.
- Call your gas supplier or the emergency services from a safe place.
- Do not return until you have been told it is safe.
Common reasons a gas hob will not light
These are the usual causes. None of them requires tools to look at.
Dirty or wet burner parts
Food debris and moisture can block the small ports or the igniter. Make sure the burner cap is seated correctly and dry.
Misaligned burner cap
If the cap is not sitting level, gas may not reach the flame ports and the igniter may not spark in the right place.
Dirty or damaged igniter
The igniter needs to spark close to the burner. A dirty or worn one may click without lighting.
Low gas supply
If the cylinder or supply is nearly empty or the valve is partly closed, flames may be weak or fail.
Blocked ports
Spills can block gas ports, causing uneven or failed lighting.
Electrical supply to the igniter
Some igniters rely on a battery or mains power. If a battery has run down, clicking may weaken.

Safe steps
- Switch off all burners and let everything cool.
- Clean visible spills from burner caps and bases with a damp cloth. Dry them completely.
- Re-seat the cap so that it is level.
- Check that any battery-powered igniter has a fresh battery, where this is described in the manual.
- Try again once, in a well-ventilated room.
If it still does not light, or you notice a smell of gas, stop.
When to stop and call a professional
- Any smell of gas
- Yellow, lazy or sooty flames, or flames that lift off the burner
- Soot marks on pots or the hob
- A hissing sound with no flame
- Damaged hoses, regulators or connections
- A burner that stays alight when it should not
- A repeated failure after the safe steps above
