Fridge Stopped Cooling? What to Do in the First Hours

When a fridge warms up, the next few hours matter. Here is how to protect food, run safe checks and decide when it is time to call for repair.

You open the fridge for milk and the air inside feels wrong: not quite cold, a little damp, maybe the freezer is softening too. In a Bahraini kitchen where the room temperature itself can be high, food can reach unsafe temperatures sooner than you might expect. What you do in the first hours decides how much you save and how quickly the cause is found.

Step 1: Keep the doors shut

Every time you open the door, cold air escapes and warm, humid air rushes in. A closed fridge holds its temperature for a while even without cooling, so resist the urge to keep checking. Open it only to move food you want to save.

Step 2: Protect the food

Work out what matters most and move it first.

  • Put the most perishable items, such as raw meat, fish, dairy, cooked leftovers and baby milk, into a cool box with ice packs, or into another fridge or freezer if you can borrow space.
  • Keep frozen food together and as close to the freezer as possible. A full freezer holds its cold longer than a half-empty one.
  • Write down when you first noticed the warming, so you can judge what is safe later.

Moving the most perishable items to a cool box or another fridge protects food while you diagnose the fault.

Step 3: Make safe checks

None of these require tools or opening panels.

  1. Power. Check the plug is in and the socket works. Try a lamp in the same socket. If the breaker tripped, reset it once; if it trips again, leave it off.
  2. Settings. Make sure the temperature dial or display has not been bumped. Someone may have changed it while cleaning.
  3. Door seals. Check that the door closes fully and that the seal is not torn, twisted or covered in sticky residue. Close the door on a piece of paper; if it slides out easily, the seal may be leaking.
  4. Airflow inside. Make sure food is not blocking the vents that send cold air around the cabinet.
  5. Ventilation outside. Is the fridge pushed hard against a wall or boxed in? Does the back feel very hot? Poor ventilation lets the condenser overheat.
  6. Sounds. Listen for the compressor and fans. Silence, repeated clicking or a loud hum all tell a technician something.

Step 4: Note the symptoms

Write down, or record, what you notice. These details help diagnosis:

  • Is the freezer cold but the fridge warm, or both warm?
  • Is there frost on the back wall or ice around the door?
  • Is there water inside or beneath the fridge?
  • Is the compressor running constantly, cycling frequently or not at all?
  • Did a power cut, a move or a power surge precede the problem?

What not to do

When to call for repair

If the fridge is still warm after the basic checks, or you see ice build-up, leaks, burnt smells or loud noises, call a technician. For a household with young children, elderly members or medicines that need refrigeration, do not wait. Our refrigerator repair page explains what an inspection involves, and our guide on when a fridge problem becomes an emergency helps you judge urgency.

What often turns out to be the cause

Many warm fridges trace back to simple wear: a dirty condenser coil, a failed evaporator fan, a worn door seal, a faulty temperature sensor or a defrost fault that has iced up the airways. Less often, the compressor or the sealed cooling system is at fault. We cover these in common fridge faults in hot, humid climates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just turn the fridge dial colder?

If the fridge cannot cool as it is, turning the dial colder will not help and can make a defrost or sensor problem worse. Leave it at its normal setting while you diagnose.

Is it safe to keep food if the fridge was off for a few hours?

It depends on the food, how warm the room is and how long the fridge was warm. Perishable items that were above safe temperature for several hours should be thrown away.

Does unplugging the fridge for a while help?

Sometimes a fully iced-up fridge benefits from a proper defrost with the power off, but it will not cure the cause. Move food first and follow the manual.

Will the fridge be repaired in one visit?

Many faults can be diagnosed and fixed on one visit if parts are available. After inspection we will tell you what to expect.
