How you use an air conditioner matters as much as which one you own. Small habits add up over a long Bahraini summer. None of the tips below needs tools, and several cost nothing.
Use a sensible temperature
Each degree lower makes the unit work harder and longer. Choose a comfortable, moderate set point and leave it. Setting the thermostat to the lowest figure does not cool the room faster.
Keep the cool air in
- Close doors and windows while cooling.
- Seal gaps under doors and around window frames.
- Cool only the rooms in use, and close doors to the rest.
- Avoid opening the balcony door for long periods.
Block the sun
Direct sun through glass heats a room quickly. Close curtains or blinds on sunny sides in the daytime. Reflective window film or external shading can also help.

Use fans wisely
A ceiling or pedestal fan moves air and makes the room feel cooler, so you can often choose a slightly higher set point. Switch fans off in empty rooms since they cool people, not rooms.
Keep filters clean
A clogged filter reduces airflow and efficiency. Check it every few weeks in regular use. See the AC care calendar.
Look after the outdoor unit
Keep it clear of clutter and dust, and leave space for airflow. Shade is helpful, but never block the vents.
Reduce heat from inside
Cooking, ironing, drying clothes and powerful lighting add heat. Where possible, do these in the cooler hours and use extractor fans.
Use timers and sleep modes sensibly
If your unit has a timer, you can start cooling shortly before you get home rather than running the unit all day. Sleep modes slightly raise the set point over the night. Compare what works for you.
Should you leave the AC on or switch it off?
It depends. For short absences in extreme heat, many people leave it on at a moderate setting, because cooling a very hot room from scratch takes time. For long absences, switch it off. There is no single rule, so judge by how long you will be away.
Do not ignore faults
A unit with a fault cannot be saved by good habits. If cooling is weak or the unit runs constantly, get it checked. See hidden reasons your AC uses more power and arrange AC maintenance once a year.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature should I set my AC to?
Choose the warmest setting that you find comfortable. A moderate set point reduces the load on the unit.
Does a fan really help?
Yes. Moving air makes you feel cooler, so you may be comfortable at a slightly higher set point.
Does closing curtains make a difference?
Yes, particularly on sunny windows. They reduce heat entering the room.
Is it bad for the AC to run all day?
Not if it is clean and healthy. Running hours matter for electricity use, but continuous use itself is common in hot weather.
