An air conditioner that is merely weak can usually wait for a booked visit. Some problems cannot. They either put people at risk or can cause serious damage if the unit keeps running. This guide helps you tell the difference.
Safety emergencies: switch off now
If you see or smell any of the following, switch the unit off at the control and, if you can reach it safely, at the isolator or breaker. Do not use it again until it has been inspected.
- Burning or electrical smell
- Smoke or sparks
- Water leaking onto electrical parts, sockets or switches
- A breaker that trips repeatedly
- A hot, discoloured or melted plug, socket or cable
- Loud grinding, banging or screeching
Comfort and health emergencies
Sometimes the unit is not dangerous but the situation is. In Bahrain's summer heat, losing cooling can put some people at risk:
- Infants and young children
- Elderly people
- People who are unwell or have heart or breathing conditions
- Anyone taking medicine that needs a cool room
Move them to the coolest area, offer water, use fans and cool cloths, and get medical advice if they show signs of heat illness such as confusion, vomiting, fainting or very hot, dry skin. Then call for repair and tell the technician who is at risk.

Urgent, but not dangerous
These should be dealt with soon, to avoid damage:
- Ice building up on the unit
- Water dripping indoors
- Cooling that stopped completely
- A compressor that will not start
For ice, switch to fan mode or off and let it thaw. See our first-hour plan.
Can usually wait for an appointment
- Slightly weaker cooling
- A mild, new noise that is not grinding or banging (see AC noises explained)
- Odour from a dirty filter
- A remote that has stopped working

Frequently asked questions
Is a tripping breaker an emergency?
If it trips repeatedly, yes. Leave the unit off and have it checked. Repeated resetting can be dangerous.
Can I use the AC if it smells slightly musty?
A musty smell is usually a dirty filter or coil and is not an emergency, but get it cleaned.
What if the AC fails at night?
Look after anyone vulnerable first, use fans and ventilation, and call for repair. Do not attempt to open the unit.
Is water dripping from the indoor unit urgent?
Switch the unit off, protect floors and nearby electrics and arrange a repair, since a blocked drain or frozen coil is likely.
